My Thoughts on the Debate
Ok, so I had some time to mull over things today about how the debate went, how the election is going, and what my thoughts our for the future of our country.
1. The debate. I thought the third and final debate was pretty good. I got to watch the whole thing this time as well as some commentary afterwards on ABC and CNN. I liked the new format. I liked the fact that they talked to one another and actually debated each other.
Obama’s one shining moment was when they were talking about education. He said that we need to get the parents to be responsible for their children. I think that’s a huge step in the right direction.
McCain’s shining moment was when he told Obama that if he wanted to run against Bush he should of ran four years ago.
Overall, it was better than the previous two debates, but it didn’t really change my mindset much which is unfortunate.
2. Where is this election going? Well it is certainly coming to a head. It is really amazing to see just how polar opposite the candidates are. It is amazing to see the polls too. The thing everyone is pointing out is that just because Obama is ahead of McCain in the polls doesn’t mean this election is won yet. Gore was ahead of Bush at this point in the election in 2000. So we will see…
I personally think this is still anyone’s game. What upsets me is what’s going on behind the scenes. There is just way too much potential for voter fraud out there. None of us want another Florida. The current situation with ACORN and the voter fraud there is just despicable. How can this country be governed fairly if we can’t even elect officials fairly?
The election is less than 3 weeks away now and my biggest concern is still that the vast majority of the American public have not educated themselves enough to vote wisely. What is also sad is that these elections seem to come down to voting for “the lesser of two evils”. I am sorry I feel that way and I am sorry a good portion of the public feels that way. Of course, this is still politics as usual.
If you are wondering who I am voting for it is McCain. I became 100% convinced of that last night. After all the issues, for me, this comes down to voting for a celebrity who is a lawyer vs. a celebrity who is a public servant. My vote goes to the public servant.
3. Our Future. As always, the future is uncertain. I can only do what I am in control of. The only thing I am 100% in control of is me. My biggest concern is that after we sort out this credit mess we are in (read: debt mess), we still have to worry about the Baby Boomers retiring. It is a demographic trend we can not ignore which will effect everything from jobs to social security to health care.
The good news is that the younger generations have the most to benefit from it all. We can still spring back. We can still capitalize on the opportunities that our left us. The future is bright for those that want to work hard, for those that pursue their passion and talent/s, for those who are willing to wise up about the world and not be naive. And finally, for those that want to take personal responsibility for the situation they are in, not blaming others, but taking life for what it is, and creating the life they so desire. The world is their oyster.
As always, your questions, comments, and smart remarks are welcome…

Dude, I don’t want to be a douche, but point one sounds like as we discussed the debate when it was over between you and me…you wrote down everything I said. Yeah you agreed, but I think I’m actually a little upset about this.
And what do you mean it was unfortunate it didn’t change your mindset? Your mind was made up before this debate happened.
I’m pretty sure that if the American people did educate themselves about both candidates, they would vote for neither of them. Each candidate’s “platform” is just a different bastardization of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. The Republican Party is a shadow of its former self, and the Democrats should just change their party name to “American Socialists”. It’s a disgrace.
@Matthew – Yes, we discussed the debate but you have to admit that I brought up the fact that Obama made a good comment on education first. You made the first comment about McCain’s comment, but had you not been so excited about it I would have made the comment first.
And yes, I was always leaning toward McCain, but like Jason said there is always the option not to vote. Or even to write in or vote for another candidate.
@Jason I think American is ready for a more than two party system. Would you agree? More REAL competition would be healthy and good…
Saying you would have said something first is like saying, “had Edison not bought the patent from Henry Woodward and invented a more practice Incandescent light bulb, then I would’ve done that.”
Our government – as much as I’d love a third party – won’t run on a three part system. It’s setup to be a two part system.
Just to clarify, when I said “they would vote for neither of them”, I wasn’t condoning not voting; I was saying that Americans would vote for a 3rd party candidate. I think that America is more than ready for a 3rd or 4th party. Americans just need to wake up to the realization that those parties exist.
I think there open to a new party that will replace one or the other. I don’t see the Democrats, Republicans and another all going strong at once.
never thought i’d say this, but i am finally sick of the campaign ads, the messages on my machine and the debates. my advice? just watch snl. it’s much more entertaining.
