Michael Jackson’s Legacy

“The evil men do lives after them while the good is oft interred with their bones.” -Marc Antony from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar

First I thought I wouldn’t write about Michael. Then I figured I would wait till the autopsy came out. Just right now I decided it is both worthwhile to write about him and to do it now.

For what is personal development all about? It is about how we lead our lives and how we go about improving them in the ways we best see fit.

Some people loved Michael and others hated him. Many others are somewhere in the middle. And again I say it is easy to judge when all you hear about him is from some secondary source.

Like Marc Antony I come to bury Michael, not to praise him…

At a funeral, no matter who we are, if we attend, we come to “pay our respects”. While everyone’s motives are different they all come for one purpose. To remember the life of the one who has died…

I don’t care what any one says, Michael was a larger than life figure, and played a huge role in our culture. It is safe to say he was also very big internationally. Nearly everyone has bopped his or her head to his music at one point in time or another. And I would imagine most people would recognize a Michael Jackson song when they hear it.

While he was idolized by millions and had fans around the world, he did make some personal choices in his life that brought much grief. And while the world may remember him one way or another I wonder how his kids will remember him. What legacy has he left behind for them?

The honest truth is that I do not know. To tell you the truth I don’t think it matters as much to us as it does to them. Sure, his death gives the news and entertainment networks much fodder to play but it will pass in time. We will remember his music and it will be his family and friends that remember the person.

The same goes for us I think. Who cares what the world thinks? More importantly, it is what our friends and family think of us that matters. If there is love there, then love can be anywhere. And in the end love is all that matters…
